ANTHONY MCCALL: "SOLID LIGHT WORK" 2018

Attending an exhibition at Hepworth gallery Wakefield earlier this month opened my eyes to the opportunity of lighting; “Solid Light work” focused on three main pieces: “Face to Face 2013”, “Leaving (with two-minute silence) 2009” and “Doubling back 2013”.

The exhibition/installation set in dark misty rooms with beams of lights projecting onto white paint structures, the piece creates a paradox of “solid light” although we know the light is not solid, experiencing a space where the light, in fact, felt solid was breath-taking.

The solid lights engage a presence of there own giving the feeling of invading a space, with a Performative element, something I appreciate as I know that couldn’t have been pushed from the artist, there’s no time limit of duration the viewer must stay, there are no rules on how to experience this installation, its simply down to how the audience interact with the piece.

Standing back and watching people interacting with this piece was a performance itself, blowing into the solid light created a smoke effect, people almost plucking at the light alike it was strings, seeing how the audience was almost pushing there body’s through the light like it was a solid piece.
