The tagline to this exhibition is what truly cached our eyes on a late night tram ride in central Berlin:
“Can a shell sing to me? Can a human being be a snake? Can a tree be my mother or father? Can I converse with a river? Can a chicken help to communicate with my ancestors? Are there human beings that know how to sing like birds? Can my apple tree call for my help? Can animals in the forest show me how to survive? Can I listen to the insects in a fallow in the middle of the city?”
The next morning we woke early and headed straight to this exhibition at Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart, This exhibition showed multiple artists such as: (Antje Majewski with Agnieszka Brzeżańska & Ewa Ciepielewska, Carolina Caycedo, Paweł Freisler, Olivier Guesselé-Garai, Tamás Kaszás, Paulo Nazareth, Guarani-Kaiowa & Luciana de Oliveira, Issa Samb, Xu Tan, Hervé Yamguen).
This particular exhibition was extremely organic, the work often showing specific places that have been destroyed or altered, looking into capitalism and colonialism and humans influence upon the world, delving into endangered places and environments, this exhibition was touching and left you with an over riding feeling for the need of change. The work itself came in instillation, sculpture, film and photography form that added to the emotions we received.
Something that captivated me the most was the different mediums available to explore environmental changes, as I mentioned before using multiple forums for the work to be shown through, this is something I’d like to take forward with my future projects using not only film but photography, instillation and photography to help get a point across.
